20 Week Update and Club Foot Diagnosis

I'm sorry I haven't' updated you guys on life or anything since New Years day. Not long after New Years we had our 20 week anatomy scan and everything looked great except for what we suspected at the 17 week scan, his little left foot is clubbed. Cody was born with clubbed feet and so was his dad so he inherited the same gene mutation. From the start I knew I would have a little boy and he would have clubbed feet. I have known it in my soul for years. I was right except for his right foot looks normal so far. Even knowing this deep down, it was still a hard pill to swallow and was devastating to learn. I'm grateful for technology to know and see this so early on so we can prepare.

So with all of this information I wanted to wait to share until we met with the specialist to make a plan moving forward. We did that a few weeks ago and here is the update:

Meeting with the specialist was somewhat encouraging, just overwhelming. He's open to trying different treatment options like the better one we've researched in Maine but making it actually happen is another story and we are praying about pursuing it. So the method we will most likely be using is the local one but is extremely aggressive. Starting at 2 weeks old, requires 8 weeks of a new cast a week from hip to toe, then to sever his Achilles tendon and do 4 more weeks of casting, then go into boots and bar bracing (keeping his feet locked together) for 10 months then he will wear the bracing every night until he's SIX YEARS OLD. Like what. And it doesn't matter the severity or if it's one foot or both with this plan, it's the same protocol no matter what. With Cody's feet he didn't need any of that but just had a one time surgery at 4 days old and casting for 10ish months and his dad just had casting for a little while. I can't help but feel this new aggressive method feels primal and not progressive, like we're taking a step back in this specific medical treatment. My mama heart is telling us to look into the better option which requires after casting, a single leg dynamic brace and only for 2.5 years but we'd have to travel to Maine a bunch and wouldn't have close doctor supervision. It's very overwhelming but I'm grateful this is all, because in the big picture it's truly so minor.

The bar and brace will affect his hips, knees, and ankles but it's the price he will have to pay to have a pain free life. I'm glad Cody is familiar with all of this and he can help me through it. I had never even heard of clubbed feet until I met Cody. This will make life as a first time mom challenging, affecting his breastfeeding, baby wearing, sitting in high chairs, park swings, car seats, crawling, sitting, pulling up, and walking. Not to mention that during his casting process he can't get a bath. He will be sponge bathed and stinky for 13 weeks. Yikes.

For now I'm keeping his ultrasound pictures of his feet and ankles private but you will see soon enough after birth his little foot.

On a happier note, I am grateful to be 20 weeks along, and baby Raborn is half baked like the Ben and Jerry's ice cream!

I've been waiting to do this for so so long!

Look at how much space baby takes up in my body! I love the day-by-day pregnancy book so so much!
Most days baby Raborn hides deep inside and isn't visible lol. It's amazing he's in there somewhere!

Nothing like putting together a puzzle on a snowy day!

Prepping for valentines day with a run to Target!!! I love this fake flower arrangement I put together!

Since I'm not really showing, I bought this shirt to help strangers know I just haven't eaten too many donuts and there's a baby in there!

I've been continuing to eat healthy and exercise throughout my pregnancy which has honestly helped me and my bump stay so small. I have never been "skinny" and I've never hated my body but I was always very aware I didn't look like my family and it bothered them so much when I was growing up making me think about my appearance daily growing up knowing I can never reach their unrealistic expectations for me. I have an athletic build and my body can do so much. But with that all being said, since I'm so muscular, I'm SO much tinier pregnant than everyone else was because my strong stomach muscles have held baby in so tightly (even at 32 weeks while I'm writing this). It gives me such justification that just because I carried fat on my stomach always, didn't mean I was lazy fat and weak, it's just my build and I love eating right still and exercising and my muscles are there and even stronger than most, you just have to feel under the slight layer of fat. So now that baby has pushed and stretched my fat away, I finally look like I fit in and normal. I love my pregnant body!

But seriously, where is he lol!

My beachbody prenatal workouts have been incredible at keeping me feeling my best during this pregnancy and I still do them 3-4 times a week or more! I love them so much! The program has like 40+ prenatal workouts!

I'm still squeezing in many hikes with Cody and Lucy to stay active and I love it!

We found a new trail system and have been taking advantage of it and this cold weather!

Nothing like a decadent acai bowl for breakfast!

Nap time!!!

Baby Raborn's first snow!!!

And Lucy's 2nd!

Which is bigger, my burrito or baby?

Cody loves this dog and it makes my mama heart so happy! She is our pride and joy and does everything with us!!

I had to throw this in, at 21 weeks baby is the size of an eggplant. That is just hilarious!! You will get the joke if you are a millennial.

We put in some stone steps outside our porch to keep the mud from tracking in our house because it was driving us crazy.

Love,

2022 New Year, Year of Faith!!

 Cheers to 2022! I'm feeling (20)22!!!

My word of the year last year was Hope. The hope that everything would be ok and we would get pregnant fast when we were ready and the baby would be healthy. It was a good year.

2022's word of the year is Faith. The faith we have in the Lord and the faith we have that we will bring a heathy baby Raborn home come May/June. Life can be scary but faith can get you through.

Time to change out my rings. The word of the year for 2023 will be love! I already have that ring ready too XD.

Also baby Raborn is ringing in the new year with me bumping along. This 16th week I feel like he has really popped!

New Years Eve!

Closing out 2021 is so bittersweet. It's probably the first year in my life where I didn't want to leave a year, which is a great thing in my book. 2021 was just that good. Nothing bad happened to us (minus getting covid in February) and so many abundant blessings were bestowed upon us. I am so grateful and don't want it to end. I know 2022 will be even better because baby Raborn will actually be here but I guess out of fear, in the moment right now, baby is healthy, nothing bad has happened to us and I fear that could all change even though I know it won't. But basically everything is ok right now and I want to stay like that for as long as I can even if we didn't move forward which I know is not good. You shouldn't fear the future like that. Life after loss is just so different and difficult to manage sometimes. I know we had a early early loss last time but he/she was just as much our baby as baby Raborn now. At least that's what we believe with our faith. But I'm using my faith to push myself out of that fear and embrace and look forward to the amazing things coming our way in 2022. Our last New Years as a family of 2!

We rang the new year in with our sparkling cider and mom-osas! I don't think I've ever not stayed up to midnight to watch the ball drop. Staying up late is easy to me. Cody and Lucy fell asleep at 10pm though so I had to wake them up for the big event.

I made my first charcuterie board! I'm so proud of myself!!

Lucy was SO scared of all of the fireworks. She stayed buried beneath Cody and I from 8pm-1am shaking.

But here we go 2022! I'm so excited!!

Also our first baby would have been 1 years old today. That is so bittersweet. New Years Eve will always hit a little different for the rest of our lives but I still want to remember and honor his/her little soul. I think about them daily. It's the what if's that kill me. We would have been celebrating his birthday with a little Winnie the Pooh party and we would start trying for baby #2 in one to two months. I recognize this day for that reason because it is part of our life and our story.

Babymoon!!

I've been waiting to go on our Babymoon basically since we got married. I knew we wanted to wait 5 years to start trying for kids but every day of these past 5 years I have been longing for this time with all of my heart. Preparing away. So the time is finally here praise God and we did a 5 day getaway to Panama City Beach where we haven't' been back to since our honeymoon. We plan on taking our kids back here when the oldest is 6 and the youngest is 4 and we will bring Lucy!!

I always dreamed of going on our Babymoon in early 2nd trimester and for Christmas break and that's exactly what we did. The weather was beyond amazing staying above 75-80 degrees during the day and above 65 at night. We got to relax and just enjoy time together on the beach. We spent 90% of the time on the beach. The water was too cold to get all the way in but we got in to our waist! It only stormed on us for 15 minutes one of the days.

We started the trip on Sunday stopping in Dothan Alabama to split the trip in half. The next morning we got up early and left for PCB. We arrived at noon and walked the pier, board walk, and ate at Margarittaville. There was hardly any crowd at all in the whole city and we got a parking spot right near the pier entrance, only had to wait 10 minutes to eat and the beach was empty!

My virgin pina colada so good!

Where my finger is pointing is the condo building we stayed at, 20th floor.

Mom and Dad!!

The views from our room were exquisite! We had a balcony right to the beach/ocean from our room and living room! Taking a nap listening to the waves was incredible. We spent most of the early mornings and evenings on that balcany!

The view on the backside of the building.

I got color changing nail polish and color changing toe ring and earrings from Del Sol! So amazing!!

One of the nights we ate at Saltwater Grill and it was absolutely amazing!!

The storm rolling in!

Bump pic!

I'm so proud of my little bump :).

Sunrises were breathtaking!

We stayed from 5:30am-5:30pm every day on the beach maximizing our daylight!

And the sunsets!!

We drove home Thursday morning after checking out at 9am and couldn't wait to see our sweet Lucy! My sweet mama watched Lucy for the week for us and Lucy was in heaven spending time with Grandma! We plan on taking our second baby babymoon to the Biltmore November 2023.

I always pictured going to Hawaii for our babymoon but it is expensive, I don't feel comfortable traveling on a plane that long and being that far from my doctor plus covid with pregnancy so we will save that trip for just the two of us for our 10 year wedding anniversary in 4.5 years.

With so much love,
Kayla and Cody Raborn
